Agave Nectar

Q. What are the benefits and drawbacks of agave nectar or syrup? Would you recommend its use?

The bottom line is that agave sweeteners are refined and not inherently healthier than sugar, honey, high-fructose corn syrup, or any other sweetener. Hence, as with any other refined sweetener, NEWSTART® educates away from the use of refined products and promotes the re-education of the palate to choose whole plant foods (whole dates) over any refined sweetener.

Are there any benefits of honey or agave over white sugar?

Table sugar, honey and agave are all considered nutritive sweeteners and contain calories. All contribute to added sugars in the diet associated with excess refined carbohydrate intake and weight gain. Table sugar and honey have more similar chemical properties with approximately 1/2 breaking down to glucose and 1/2 fructose. Agave is closer to 90% fructose and 10% glucose. Glucose and fructose are metabolized differently. Glucose raises blood sugar levels, fructose does not appear to raise blood sugar, instead is processed in liver. However, fructose tends to make more fat in liver raising triglycerides. Fructose also is sweeter so supposedly can use less quantity for same amount of sweetness. Many sweeteners are highly processed in order to extract the sugar from the sugar cane/agave plant/etc. White table sugar has gotten probably the most heat for it’s refining process, which can include chemicals/bleaching and some accounts of animal product (bone) use to make sugar. I would use caution with any sweetener, choosing the least refined sweeteners such as raw honey, date sugar, raw sugar, etc.

Can the use of agave sweeteners cause bloating?  I’ve been having this problem with bloating, and I am curious if using the agave sweeteners is apart of my problem.
