Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Place 1 ½ c. water, seasoning, and quartered onion in blender and blend briefly, just long enough to chop the onion.
  2. Pour into a sauce pan and add bulgur wheat.
  3. Bring to a boil, cover and let stand for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile

  1. Blend sunflower seeds and water.
  2. Place in a mixing bowl with the remaining ingredients.
  3. Mix all together. Make into patties with a scant ½ cup in each. HINT: An easy and quick method is to place by the scoopful onto a griddle with an ice cream scoop.
  4. Flatten into round, ½ inch thick patties.
  5. Fry for about 7 minutes on both sides, or bake in oven for about 20 minutes at 350 degrees.
  6. Turn and bake 10 more minutes to brown both sides. HINT: Don’t let the patties brown too fast. You want them to cook in the middle.
  7. Cool on a rack before storing in plastic bags or container.

I am curious if other seeds (such as pumpkin) or other nuts can be used to replace the sunflower seeds. I like sunflower seeds, but at this time of year, pumpkin seeds are more plentiful around here. I am excited to try this recipe. It will be a nice change from our regular veggie burgers.

Where do I find the answer to the question asked by Linda?  What is vegetable gravy seasoning?
I am assuming that the oatmeal in this recipe would be 1 cup of cooked quick oats, am I correct?

Hello Timothy ! Bernard Jensen’s vegetable gravy seasoning can most likely be found at your local health food store or a Whole Foods if there is one in your area. Also you can google his name and order from their website directly as well. Blessings ! Cheryl

I would be careful with the vegetable seasoning by Bernard’s…The main ingredient is hydrolyzed soy protein, which most people do not realize is a HIDDEN NAME FOR MSG http://www.shopwell.com/bernard-jensens-vegetable-seasoning/seasonings/p/2643410212

I would look at the ingredients, and make my own vegetable seasoning without including this stuff.

Thanks for this great looking burger recipe.  I will definitely be making it.

Would this work without seeds or nuts? need a wfpb no oil or nut sub.?

  16. 16 Cheryl Apr 1, 2018, 5:27 AM PDT

    Hi Peggy,
I would suggest adding rice milk or soy milk in its place as it is the liquid that mixes with the dry ingredients. Or just try plain water. Hope this helps.
