Simple Homemade Hummus

Learn how to make this ubiquitous chickpea spread and dip.

Instructions

  1. Fill a pot with enough fresh water to cover garbanzos by at least 1 inch.
  2. Bring the water to boil.

  3. Add the garbanzos to water and simmer over medium heat for 5 minutes. 
  4. Add 1/2 cup of the warm water from the pan and garbanzos to a blender. 

  5. Combine remaining ingredients and whirl until smooth. As necessary, thin out the mixture with more water.
  6. Stir in a dash of cumin and a dash of chili powder.

  7. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon olive oil before serving. 

 

Tip: You can garnish the hummus with a sprig of parsley or pine nuts. Serve on a shallow platter with pita chips or pita bread. Another great way to eat hummus is to spread it on a tortilla and top with kalamata olives, chopped tomatoes, roasted bell peppers and lettuce.

Ready in about: 15 minutes

Serves about: 10-12 people
