Water

“Anything but water, please!” We really don’t say it, but when we go to the drive-up window or sit down to order a meal, that is exactly what most Americans in essence say: coffee please, or Mountain Dew, Coke, a milk shake, a glass of wine, but rarely plain water! Hot days? We automatically reach for a soda. Your brain is about 80% water. Water keeps you thinking clearly. “Anything but water” is a bad tradition that puts an overwhelming osmotic load into the blood stream, making it sticky and flow poorly. Only water can create the proper environment for your blood to flow smoothly, help regulate your blood pressure, and promote vascular health. In one study, men who drank five or more glasses of water daily had a 54% less risk of a heart attack than those who drank two or less daily, or who used other beverages.

Weight Loss

People who drank two eight-ounce glasses of water 20 to 30 minutes before meals ate an average of 75 fewer calories at that meal. In another study two eight-ounce glasses of water before meals resulted in a 44% greater weight loss over 12 weeks than in a non-water control group. That is staggering! Reach for water, not coffee, or soda. That is a proven way to curb appetite and lose weight.

Caffeine

Avoid it entirely! Caffeine is a diuretic. Coffee and most soda pop contain a whopping amount of caffeine geared to dehydrate you. It can raise the blood pressure, blood sugar, and blood fats. It stimulates the nervous system and can cause irritability, anxiety, tremors, chronic fatigue, and insomnia. After time, the pick-me-up is only preventing a major let-down, produced by the habit itself. Eventually you hit bottom.

What happens if I don’t drink enough water?

The kidneys have to work much harder to excrete toxins, and may be damaged. Each cell in the body needs water to function well, so inadequate water intake can cause disease. Chronic lack of water is linked to bladder cancer. Fatigue and headaches are a common result of drinking too little water. In the summer months, increase intake and stay ahead of thirst. When you are thirsty you are already dehydrated. Water keeps the body cool. It brings the heat from the inner organs to the surface of the skin in the form of sweat, and also acts as an evaporative cooler. Drink eight cups per day. Also, enjoy hot and cold contrast showers. The cold stimulates the immune system, and hot baths open the pores and eliminates toxins.

Remember, water is of vital importance – use it abundantly for good health and vitality.

I would like information on ADHD. My counselor passed away about a year ago. I was taking Ritalin for a while but now I am on no medication. I would like to be tested for ADHD and make necessary changes in my life. Preferably with no meds involved. I am on an emotional roller coaster. One day I am up one day I am down. I tend to start projects and never finish them. I make a decision to do something one day and the next day I completky change my mind. I an 63 years of age and a member of the SDA church. I was just terminated from my job yesterday. I started working for the government right out of high school (1967) and went to be a contractor with the same agency when my position with the government was outsourced 11 years ago. I am not as concerned about losing my job. I am more concerned with family relations and getting on with my life. It would be especially hard for me to start a new lifestyle. My family is not in thr church and I sometimes have problems doing things for myself. I usually base my decision on someone Else’s decision. Do you have any suggestions ??

I just completed a Depression Recovery seminar in Annapolis MD last month. The seminar was excellent but I need ongoing help since I have problems retaining what I read, procrastination and completing projects. I would like to serve Jesus more completely in my life but I have problems making rational decisions as I sometimes make them on impulse and change my mind back and forth many times. Lack of trust in people is a big thing and placing too much trust is at times a bigger thing when you constantly try and get someone else to make decisions for you because you fear the outcome and your own ability to make the decisions on your own. I have many incomplete projects and my home looks like a landfill. Sometimes the decisions I make bring problems into my life that affect my family, the lives of others and myself. I want to turn my life over to Jesus completely and serve Him and have Him direct me in my decisions.  This is the only thing that will bring me peace and happiness vs the heartache and depression I am now experiencing. I also have problems with anger, confusion, discouragement and not being able to complete tasks. My mind often wanders and different thoughts race through my mind. Is there any natural medication for someone with ADHD that will counteract these symptoms. A few were breifly mentioned in Dr Nedley’s depression recovery seminar I know that all of us have different body chemistries and what works for you might not work for me but I really feel that the natural cures are the best for our brain and physical well being. Just as I also believe that changing our thought patterns and filling them over and over with the love of Jesus will restore our mental well being. I have had a hard time retaining what I have heard spoken at church and at seminars over the years. Problems with my thought processes having to do with love and seeing beauty in nature. I would like to change my life from a self serving material life to a Christ centered spiritual life. Sometimes I feel that there is no hope for me and discouragement takes over but I know deep in my heart that Jesus is master and He can heal me and use me to further his kingdom no matter what my condition might be. But I must adhere to his health principles and even more to his spiritual and mental principles of the mind and heart. I tend to ramble on so please forgive me.

    God Bless,
    Tom

Love your site! I’ve been plant-based for three months and I’m loving it. My big down fall is coffee.  Partly due to chronic lack of sleep. This is mostly because of my job.  I’m going to put a high priority on sleep and work on kicking the black coffee habit. Any ideas on a substitute?  I’ve tried quite a few but never have found one with a kick that didn’t have sugar.

Try Roma or another cereal beverage.  The coffee may be more of a cause of your insomnia than you think. Galen Comstock, MD
